It’s time. The week we’ve all been waiting for. The week our favorite team goes up against our least favorite team in a fight for the ultimate prize: 12 months of bragging rights. We’re taking a closer look at some of the best matchups we’re thankful for during Thanksgiving weekend.
#22 UCLA at USC(1:30pm ET Saturday, ESPN)
Though the Bruins (8-3) are ranked and the Trojans (7-4) are not, this classic rivalry game, which marks the the 85th meeting between the two SoCal teams, will decide the Pac-12 division. How’s that for stakes?
Last year, UCLA reached their biggest point gap last year in their win over USC for the first time since 1986, which was an elimination game for the Trojans, too. USC has failed to take away... Read More
It’s no surprise USC and Oregon – both of whom are used to being the among the best – have managed to claw their way into the last few ranking spots in the last half of the season. Both teams are heading into Saturday’s game with matching 7-3 records, and both are coming off of a four-game winning streak.
These teams are pretty equal in a lot of ways: Not only are both teams looking for their 8th win, but the loser will likely fall out of the Top 25, making #22 USC at #23 Oregon a pretty important game for the Trojans and Ducks.
Both teams have gone through their fair share of turmoil this season: Oregon QB Vernon Adams Jr. was out earlier in the year with... Read More
#16 Houston vs #25 Memphis
As great as the marquee matchups in the SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, and ACC have been this season, this week’s most intriguing matchup comes from one of the smaller divisions: the American West Conference.
Houston is the last remaining undefeated team outside the powerhouse conferences. Memphis was in the same boat until the Navy pulled off a surprising upset, breaking then-#13 Memphis’ 15-game win-streak 45-20.
Before last week, the Memphis Tigers were averaging 48 points per game and out-rushed 7 out of 9 opponents this season. The Navy and the Tigers were tied up 17-all halfway through the 3rd quarter before the Midshipmen ran away with the game, scoring 28 points to the Tigers' 3. As I mentioned, this is Memphis’ first... We’ll be the first to admit Michigan State at Nebraska is an unconventional Game of The Week, with one team ranked 6th in the nation with a perfect 8-0 record and the other sunk to the bottom of the Big Ten division at a pitiful 3-6.
But Nebraska is grasping tightly to a 16-game winning streak at home against Michigan State. Though Nebraska may not seem like much of a threat, it’s safe to say the Cornhuskers have been looking forward to this game all season.
Last year, Michigan State beat Nebraska 27-22 at home in a game that came down to the final possession, though Nebraska finished last season 9-4 (5-3), which is leaps and bounds better than where they are currently sitting. They were also off a 5... Read More
This week is a week of seemingly uneven matchups, especially our Game of the Week, the SEC pairing of #19 Ole Miss at Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama. While only one of the teams is ranked, the latest chapter in this storied rivalry has big implications.
Ole Miss is coming off of a big 23-3 win against Texas A&M last week; the Rebels are currently sitting at 6-2 and are 3rd in the West division behind LSU and Alabama. They have yet to play the former, and they beat the latter earlier this season 43-37.
While Ole Miss appears to be the better team, they are going on the road to face a team in a desperate do-or-die situation: Auburn needs a win in order to even be... Read More
To say #8 Florida at #6 LSU is an interesting matchup is like saying “Bear” Bryant was a decent football coach: it’s a bit of an understatement.
This game is likely to set the tone for the rest of Florida’s season, which isn’t looking as bright as it was just last week. The Gators' starting quarterback, Will Grier, has been suspended for a calendar year – yeah, not just the rest of the season – for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. The Gators are currently riding an undefeated wave, as are the Tigers.
With Grier out, the Gators will look to sophomore Treon Harris to lead them to victory. Harris, who was suspended earlier this year for an unspecified violation of team rules, started the last 6 games... Read More
In a season riddled with upsets, it’s only logical to focus on #23 Cal at #5 Utah as our game of the week.
We’re so used to hearing about elite teams like Alabama, who’ve won three of the last five BCS Championships, but it seems it’s finally time for another team to shine, and these two teams are as likely contenders as any.
Last season, the Utah Utes broke into the Top 25 AP poll and ended the season 9-4, considerably better than the previous two years' 5-7 records. But they lost another offensive coordinator, a defensive coordinator, and a recruiter, which left most people bracing for another 5-7 finish, or worse. However, the Utes have bulldozed through every opponent they’ve faced in 2015 and landed in the... Read More
As we make our way into the third week of conference matchups, we’re starting to get a better look at the playoff picture. Some teams have faltered and others have risen to the occasion. This week, we are looking at two of the latter: #3 Ole Miss Rebels vs. #25 Florida Gators.
The Rebels and the Gators are both undefeated and are coming off of big wins against rival teams last week. The Rebels dominated Vanderbilt 27-16, while the Gators barely topped Tennessee 28-27 for the 11th consecutive time. The Gators have crept into the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since 2013, and Ole Miss has been sitting in the top five since their huge win over Alabama – by far their toughest opponent –... We are four weeks deep into college football season and it’s safe to say this season has been anything but ordinary so far. From devastating injuries, like #3 TCU losing six of its starters, to major upsets, like Ole Miss topping Alabama, every week has been a tossup. The one thing that seems unnervingly consistent is: no matter the ranking or what happened last week, anything is possible. A seemingly slow fourth week is chock-full of upset potential, like #19 USC vs. Arizona State University.
On the surface, it would appear that the Trojans would destroy the Sun Devils without breaking much of a sweat, but it would be silly – nay, idiotic – to rule Arizona State out just yet. Yes, they are unranked, but so was Stanford last... Read More
Every week, a tough decision has to be made: Which college game do we feature for our Game of The Week? Well, this week we are throwing the rulebook out the window and choosing TWO games to chat about – GASP! Can we do that?! Yes, yes we can.
Ole Miss at Alabama (9:15pm ET Saturday, ESPN)
We’ll start with the obvious choice: Ole Miss Rebels vs. Alabama Crimson Tide. It’s a #15 team going against a #2 team and both are currently undefeated. Besides fighting to keep their record pristine, this game is important for both teams due to their rocky history.
Last year, #11 Ole Miss upset #3 Alabama at home, 23-17. Ole Miss was trailing 17-10 halfway through the 4th quarter before they tied it with... Read More
