In Major League Baseball on Wednesday, Justin Verlander fanned 9 over 7 innings of 2-run ball, and the Detroit scored a run in the 8th and another in the 9th of the Tigers' win 3-2 over the White Sox; Hanley Ramirez’s grand slam dug Boston out of a 3-run hole, propelling the Red Sox to an 8-6 win against the Rays; the Rangers eviscerated the Mariners 14-1 as Carlos Gomez hit a grand slam and Rougned Odor had a pair of homers and 5 RBI; Houston rallied for 3 in the 8th, the first run scoring on a dropped third strike, en route to the Astros 4-3 defeat of Oakland; the Rockies blanked the Dodgers 7-0, as Colorado pinch hitters Stephen Cardullo and Ryan Raburn homered and doubled, respectively, and then the the Dodgers stunned the Rockies 10-8 by scoring 3 in the 8th and 5 in the 9th, with Andrew Toles capping the scoring with a grand slam; the Giants held off the Diamondbacks 4-2, as Matt Moore struck out 7 in 5 innings, giving up just 1 run; Aaron Sanchez ran his record to 13-2 with 6 innings of 1-run ball, as the Blue Jays beat the Orioles 5-3; Ricky Nolasco pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just 4 hits, while fanning 7, to lead the Angels to a 3-0 win over the Reds; the Nationals squeaked past the Phillies 2-1, behind 6 innings of 1-run ball from Gio Gonzalez and a solo homer from Jayson Werth; Corey Kluber gutted his way through 8 innings, giving up 3 runs on a pair of homers, but hanging on for the Indians’ 8-4 win over the Twins; Matt Wisler struck out 10 in 6 innings, surrendering just 1 run on 4 hits and 3 walks, as the Braves beat the Padres 8-1; Kelly Johnson hit a bases-clearing double and Bartolo Colon gave up just 2 runs in 7 innings to lead the Mets past the Marlins 5-2; MVP candidate Kris Bryant homered in the 1st, and Jason Hammel gave up just 1 run in 6 innings, as the Cubs completed a sweep of the Pirates with a 6-5 win; Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a 3-run shot, and Matt Garza gave up 1 run in 7 innings as the Brewers bested the Cardinals 3-1; New York’s bullpen threw 7 no-hit innings, and Brian McCann hit a sac fly in the 13th to give the Yankees a 5-4 win over the Royals.
